What Is Umrah?

The Rituals of Umrah, Step by Step

1. Ihram

Before crossing the Meeqat (boundary), pilgrims enter the state of Ihram — a state of spiritual purity — by performing ghusl (ritual bath), wearing the Ihram garments, and making the intention (niyyah) for Umrah while reciting the Talbiyah.

2. Tawaf

Upon reaching the Haram, pilgrims perform Tawaf — circling the Kaaba seven times in a counter-clockwise direction, starting and ending at the Black Stone corner.

3. Sa'i

Next is Sa'i: walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, commemorating Hajar's search for water for her son Ismail.

4. Halq or Taqsir

Umrah concludes with men either shaving their head (Halq) or trimming their hair (Taqsir), while women trim a small portion of their hair. This marks the end of the state of Ihram.
