For a first-time pilgrim, Umrah can feel overwhelming to plan โ but broken into steps, it's straightforward. This guide walks you through everything from booking to the rituals themselves, written for travellers going from Lahore and across Pakistan.
What Is Umrah?
Umrah is a pilgrimage to the Holy Kaaba in Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year, unlike Hajj, which happens on fixed dates. It is not obligatory but is highly recommended in Islam, and many families choose to perform it more than once in their lifetime.
Before You Travel
- Umrah visa: Your travel agency arranges this along with your flight and hotel booking. Processing usually takes a few working days once documents are submitted.
- Vaccinations: Saudi authorities may require specific vaccinations depending on the season โ your agency will confirm current requirements at the time of booking.
- Packing: Men need two plain white unstitched sheets for Ihram; women wear simple, modest clothing that covers the body. Pack comfortable sandals, a small prayer mat, and any personal medication.
- Money matters: Carry a mix of cash (Saudi Riyals) and a debit/credit card. Most hotels and shops near the Haram accept cards.
The Rituals of Umrah, Step by Step
1. Ihram
Before crossing the Meeqat (boundary), pilgrims enter the state of Ihram โ a state of spiritual purity โ by performing ghusl (ritual bath), wearing the Ihram garments, and making the intention (niyyah) for Umrah while reciting the Talbiyah.
2. Tawaf
Upon reaching the Haram, pilgrims perform Tawaf โ circling the Kaaba seven times in a counter-clockwise direction, starting and ending at the Black Stone corner.
3. Sa'i
Next is Sa'i: walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, commemorating Hajar's search for water for her son Ismail.
4. Halq or Taqsir
Umrah concludes with men either shaving their head (Halq) or trimming their hair (Taqsir), while women trim a small portion of their hair. This marks the end of the state of Ihram.
Tips for First-Timers
- Perform Tawaf and Sa'i at a comfortable pace โ there is no rush, and crowding is heaviest right after the five daily prayers.
- Stay close to your group leader in crowded areas, especially during peak seasons like Ramadan.
- Keep a printed copy of your visa and hotel booking with you at all times.
- Book a package that includes a hotel within walking distance of the Haram โ it saves both time and energy during your stay.
